Backup[edit source]

Is there a way to back up the contents of my Media Wiki? Jsmith (talk) 21:17, 26 August 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Jsmith: There are a few ways. The first is using Special:Export on the wiki by listing off the pages you want to back up or alternatively you can ask me to provide you with a full dump of the wiki including revision data so you can keep a backup which can be imported easily in future. It depends on the exact needs though. John (talk) 21:19, 26 August 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As a fellow sysadmin (and veteran of the web hosting field), my concern is that I (and others) put a ton of effort into our respective wikis to have you disappear into the cold night. The fear is further enunciated by the fact you aren't charging us anything. Where do the finances come from to run this project? Thankfully, Mediawiki is a great system that operates almost anywhere so if I have a way of backing up the wiki every once in a while I'd feel safe and I'm sure others would too. Then, if you disappear it doesn't matter. I will request a full backup from you every month or so, if it isn't too inconvenient for you. Jsmith (talk) 21:24, 26 August 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
We're funded by donations by the community with a backup source of myself if necessary. Dumping the wiki monthly is of no issue to me really. I may automate it if you're asking for it monthly but I need to see first. John (talk) 21:37, 26 August 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Rights[edit source]

How come rights arent given by CreateWiki? Is this an error? Could you check on the other private wiki that I just created? And also, when creating the first wiki I did get a MW Exception error. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 11:51, 16 September 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

likely that. SPF is aware and said he would look into it today. I'm swamped with other stuff right now though, so CreateWiki and exceptions are not a priority (unless they're seriously breaking like the HHVM issue was recently). John (talk) 11:52, 16 September 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Problem with search[edit source]

Hello John,

on my wiki, mecanon, I get the following error everytime I do a search:

" A database query error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software.

Function: SearchMySQL::searchInternal Error: 145 Table './mecanonwiki/searchindex' is marked as crashed and should be repaired (185.52.1.77) "

Would you know what is happening?

Thanks

Hi, I am aware and it currently my priority to investigate and fix it. I'll post more information as it becomes available. John (talk) 13:57, 21 September 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Resolved earlier. John (talk) 16:37, 21 September 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Rename Wiki[edit source]

John, is it possible to rename a wiki without deleting it and then creating a new one? Carhur61 (talk) 17:57, 6 December 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, renaming a wiki is possible without deleting it. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 05:29, 7 December 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
How can I do it? I guess some Admin permissions have to be granted. If that is not possible, can you rename it for me? The current name is Charlas de Sábado and I want to name it Hurtadopedia. Thank you very much Carhur61 (talk) 17:28, 7 December 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Carhur61: Sorry for the very late response, you can't do it. Please ask at Steward's noticeboard and it will be done. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 09:30, 30 December 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Goodbye[edit source]

I don't know if you ever read this, but I don't care about that. As I've already said via e-mail and in the rights log - sad to see you go. I promised I would take over your work if I had to, and I will do that now . We'll improve our dream project, to become the best place where people love to have a wiki!

Good luck with your RL, and I hope to see you again in the future (no matter which role)! <3 Southparkfan (talk) 17:24, 20 December 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Southparkfan: did a great job with regards above. I know I haven't recently been as active in this project but I'm hoping to change this. Sad to see you go, and hope to see you around. Take care, John. -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 23:18, 20 December 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I know I'm late. I remember the good days since my day 1 of wikilife, and I deeply thank you for your guidance. I really have nothing much to say, just ;-(((((..... Take care, — revi 14:43, 29 December 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry for being so late, I only saw the post now. You will always be remembered and missed at Miraheze, and will be remembered as one of the founders. Good luck in life! Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 15:14, 29 December 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Umm... I'm not sure why you're saying this. As of 22:23, 24 February 2016 (UTC), John is still around. Saline (talk) 04:54, 25 February 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Unanswered requests[edit source]

@John: hi John, some Christipedia wiki feature request entries have have been archived (see Archive3) without being answered or done. How come? You have moved them on 22 February to the archive3 page. Kees Langeveld (talk) 22:20, 24 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The bot (or me in this case by mistake) archives based on last response not on whether the request was done or not (which is really bad of a system). The reason it has not been handled is a serious lack of volunteers able to handle requests unfortunately. As there is a lack of man power, a lot of requests are going unanswered, it's something we don't like but something we can't really handle. The best thing to do is re-request them. John (talk) 22:24, 24 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wiki[edit source]

Hi Mr John How to change wiki or renaming wiki? If can't to change. Do you have to create a new wiki?. See SN there was one request. Thank you :) TriX (talk) 13:33, 21 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. You aren't able to rename wikis as it requires a fairly hands-on approach by moving databases on the database server. The user should always be directed to file a request on Request features for these sorts of things and the relevant person will get a hold of the particular request by either searching it out themselves or someone who is more active in the technical work gets the relevant person to handle it. John (talk) 13:57, 21 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oh. Is there a limit to create a wiki for users ? example: 1 user allowed to create 3 or 4 wiki? Thanks before TriX (talk) 22:30, 21 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There is no limit. John (talk) 22:40, 21 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Could you make a comment about why nobody answer any of my wiki questions?

What happend? Tring to Help to the Community is not a good idea for make a wiki here?

--JORGEFE (talk) 14:50, 24 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, I'm not able to comment on why the community hasn't given you a response on any questions you asked. I'm not actively involved in the community aspect of things really either. It's best to keep in mind everyone is a volunteer and thusly there is no requirement for replies (unfortunately). John (talk) 15:18, 24 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

PLEASE DELETE MY ACCOUNT AND WIKI 2[edit source]

When I refer to "community" I mean the goal of my dead wiki for lack of some help to do it well. My wiki was to coordinate social assistance in my Country .. !!! And of course I understand that my wiki is not welcome. But I do not understand why no one has answered me anything. Not even you. Good luck in your life.

Sincerely, Jorge Fernandez from Argentina. --JORGEFE (talk) 16:36, 24 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question[edit source]

Hi John. This may be annoying but I'd like to know why you have a global ban on Wikimedia Thank you. 190.140.251.11 04:09, 30 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Who is you ? And who yourname TriX (talk) 04:37, 30 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Information I'm not disclosing (for legal purposes) but the global ban is just text and part of a process. The physical policy behind it does not apply or affect me as a different agreement takes precedent over it. John (talk) 11:15, 30 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Could Miraheze be my new home?[edit source]

John, I am looking for a place to host http://anduin.kgv.nl/, but I have a few questions:

  • Can it be reached on its domainname?
  • Can you handle monthly donations?
  • Do you have an upgrade schdule?
  • Can you show me som examples of similare sites hosted at Miraheze?
  • I was always planning to embed the extensions to create PDF fils of categories of pages. Do you have this functionality on board?

Thanks in advance

Kind Regards

Ruud Habets

Hi there, I can't read the contents of your wiki due to the language, but I checked and see your running MediaWiki 1.25.x. We should be able to import the contents of your wiki to Miraheze.
  • The custom domain can be used, but you'd have to get a SSL certificate as we are HTTPS-only, but if needed, a free Let's Encrypt certificate can be used.
  • I'm not sure what you mean by handling monthly donations. We accept any donations that can be made/arranged through PayPal. User:Labster is the person to talk to about donations.
Well, Anduin.kgv.nl now runs on a VPS at Versio.nl. It would not be fair to ask you to host Anduin.kgv.nl for free because at this point it takes about 19 GB including the OS. --Ruud habets (talk) 19:40, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • We don't have a defined upgrade-schedule but we try to run the most recent stable version of MediaWiki (currently 1.27), but we are running 1.26.3 right now because of some complications during experimental upgrades. We hope to have issues resolved and upgrade to the stable version soon.
That is more than what I am capable of :-) --Ruud habets (talk) 19:40, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Again, content-wise I couldn't tell, but All The Tropes is our largest wiki and it is operating on a custom domain.
I have looked at that and it looks OK although I cannot tell if they use many pix or templates what could potentially slow the site down. But I guess we can test that at some point. --Ruud habets (talk) 19:40, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Several users have requested PDF extensions, although I don't think any are installed at the moment. Hopefully one gets approved and installed soon.
-- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 11:25, 3 August 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Please note that PDFEmbed has been recently installed. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 11:59, 3 August 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I will take a look at that. --Ruud habets (talk) 19:40, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Unfortunately that is not what I am looking for. I was asked by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (http://www.kb.nl) to hand in the encyclopedia, let's say, once a year. In order to do that, I need create PDF files from chapters a through z. At this moment in time, this is not a showstopper --Ruud habets (talk) 19:46, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
"*Can you handle monthly donations?" -- If you mean donating to Miraheze, we can handle as much money as you want to give us. But seriously, donations are not required for wiki hosting -- we are running a free service. Paypal allows you to set up recurring payments, though I'm not sure if they would count as donations or purchases. (A purchase would just mean that Paypal takes a small fee.) If on the other hand you mean collecting monthly donations for your wiki and redistributing them to your wiki ownership: we are not set up to do so. You can operate your own fundraising process on your own wiki. --Labster (talk) 16:53, 3 August 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No, I would like to make a monthly contribution to support your project. --Ruud habets (talk) 19:40, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What now?[edit source]

I would like to make a suggestion how to take it from here. Can I do that by mail, that is a bit more private? --Ruud habets (talk) 19:40, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You can use Special:EmailUser to email individual users or you can use staff@miraheze.org to e-mail all the staff at Miraheze. --Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 05:19, 6 August 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

LetsEncrypt[edit source]

I don't understand you position on LetsEncrypt — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rsterbal (talkcontribs)

What John means is that he personally doesn't think LetsEncrypt is a good solution, but that is his opinion, it is not Miraheze's generally view on LetsEncyrpt, so therefore it has nothing to do on the Custom domains page. Also please remember to sign your posts with ~~~~. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 18:50, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

email addresses[edit source]

I've seen email addresses posted for the last few years. Why the policy against them here? is there a current article about the issue?

Straight text emails are crawled for spam usage. This has been common for years now and I hoped it'll be common knowledge by now. John (talk) 04:44, 28 August 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Request confirmation that you told somebody to evade a Miraheze-wide ban[edit source]

Is the assertion in Requests for Comment/Reverse community ban on User:Lawrence-Prairies that you told someone currently under a Miraheze-wide ban to post to Meta correct? --Robkelk (talk) 02:04, 16 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes. Given the lack of any appeal methods and the fact they've been actively evading, spamming and threatening staff over the past few days it seemed easier to tell them to put what they are actively doing to somewhat use in achieving what they want rather than taking away all of our time to deal with them. It seems to have worked as since they made the request we've gotten a lot more time back. They also made an appeal to staff@ which I asked someoje to post on wiki or respond to of which no one did which meant we had forfeited their right to appeal one which was not (or is not) revoked by any ban. John (talk) 08:11, 16 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please remove my ban from chat[edit source]

Please remove the ban I have from using #miraheze

Rsterbal (talk) 23:46, 22 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Rsterbal: I will if you agree to par take in civil discussions, stop demanding what administrators can do with their discretion and listen to reasonable requests by IRC channel ops. John (talk) 13:52, 23 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can you provide examples of:

1) What you think is a civil discussion?

2) Chat policy?Rsterbal (talk) 02:38, 24 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

1) Actually engaging in a somewhat civil manner rather than shouting, demanding and instructing what others can do and then when they ask you to stop, repeatedly telling them to stop instead. Listening to reasonable requests to end discussions rather than carrying on and critising people for peace keeping.
2) As you've been told, there isn't one. There's a draft Code of Conduct however. John (talk) 06:40, 24 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Will the chat bot be turned back on soon or another will another way to monitor the chat channel be available?Rsterbal (talk) 17:48, 24 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

We have zero control over the bot so it is something for botbot.me to solve. We have no intention of providing our own logs. John (talk) 18:06, 24 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If you

FYI, the bot has been back up for almost 24 hours. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 18:40, 24 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please consider not making an official channel of the site something you don't have a plan for logging if your current plan fails.Rsterbal (talk) 11:24, 25 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There is no requirement to provide logs. A third party hosts our logs because we don't want to do it ourselves. If there logs fail, it's unfortunate. If you dislike this then you provide logs. Furthermore you seem to be skipping over the topic if this conversation and repeating behaviour by telling us what we have to do because it's what you want. As such I am not going to reverse the ban and it shall stay in place until it's original expiry date. John (talk) 14:31, 25 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If you are not interested in having a discussion, and are just enforcing terms I'm not sure why I would want to chat in your channel.

If you don't want to be transparent about your conversations in chat, I think you have a real problem.

Can I log into the channel if I don't chat in it?

Rsterbal (talk) 03:26, 26 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

We are interested in having discussions, half the time it you that isn't. As evidenced by how you banned by just repeating "stop" when people attempted to engage with you, We are transparent. John (talk) 06:50, 26 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You aren't transparent if you don't maintain public logs of the channelRsterbal (talk) 12:29, 26 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

So the public logs I linked to you don't count as public logs? We want them, we organised them, we just don't store them because we're a wiki farm and don't budget for things not related to running the service using users donations. We have public logs therefore you're picking a null fight here. John (talk) 13:11, 26 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
(talk page stalker) Can you please just stop this discussion? When you are removed from chat, that doesn't give you an excuse to continue the same problems elsewhere. I really think that you are wasting John's time right now when he could be working on many other things. Just accept the ban until it expires - you'll have a better chance at returning if you do. Fighting the ban is just going to decrease the chances of returning. -- Amanda (talk) 13:54, 26 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm more than happy to pay for those logs to be made available

Please note:

on your main page (https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/Miraheze) you list

  • IRC: #miraheze (recommended)

as the recommended way to contact you. Rsterbal (talk) 01:18, 27 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Your point is? Regardless of payment were not going to duplicate a free service that has worked well for over a year. We have logs, that are public. End of. A note though, if you wish to continue being disruptive then I will have no issue is making this a permanent ban. IRC is not a necessity it's rather a good privilege with Miraheze and a way to contact us. If you continue to show you don't want to constructively use the platform then we have no reason to let you. You ban expires in the first week of May so I suggest you do otherwise until then. John (talk) 08:13, 27 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If you decide to remove the ban from chat I'd be willing to try messaging the ops before posting it to the channel. Rsterbal (talk) 22:29, 28 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wiki creator[edit source]

Hi,

Would you feel comfortable with granting me wiki creator rights? I've noticed the backlog sometimes exceeding 4 or 5 requests and sometimes even more, and I would like to do my part to help out. -- Amanda (talk) 01:24, 27 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Not sure if the other sysadmins feel the same, but based on your previous interactions with wiki creating I would firstly like to ask you a few questions on IRC before thinking about granting wikicreator. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 19:02, 27 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Reception123: I poked you on IRC yesterday and did not see an answer. Please let me know when you are available to chat. -- Amanda (talk) 11:19, 28 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Given user's prior history of poor communication (not including today's incident) I formally oppose the grant of permission. — revi 14:25, 28 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have asked Amanda a few questions on IRC and I see no issues with the actual understanding of how the wiki creation process works, and which requests are to be accepted/declined etc. The community aspect may be an issue though, so I think that the sysadmins should discuss this before taking a decision. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 15:01, 29 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The community aspect is definitely an issue. If Amanda is not LP, then Amanda has a history of not securing accounts so that LP cannot use them. (If Amanda is LP, then there are other issues to address.) I would be extremely wary of giving any enhanced rights to this account. --Robkelk (talk) 18:25, 29 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As far as I am aware there has been no occurrences of LP using Amanda's account. Though it'll be helpful if claims were backed by evidence especially when formulating a view of opposition. John (talk) 18:32, 29 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
LP did previously compromise my Internet routers, but not my actual account. My account has been secure from day 1 because it has been locked for at least half of its existence. -- Amanda (talk) 19:34, 29 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I trust that admission is sufficient as evidence. --Robkelk (talk) 21:37, 29 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
"not my actual account" so therefore point invalid? John (talk) 21:39, 29 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

(reset indent) The point of my account being used by LP is invalid. However, LP did compromise my Internet connection and thus had the ability to perform disruptive behavior under my name, which she did. This has stopped now. -- Amanda (talk) 21:48, 29 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I thought you guys willingly shared an account back in November and merely used different signatures in order to differentiate. The DeltaQuad days.
If we merely look back at an edit made back in December by DQ/LP, we find that this person referenced themselves in the signature as Amanda and linked to a GitHub repository of a user called AmandaQuad.
An argument could be made that DQ/LP on Amanda's behalf and that Amanda never had control of that account; this edit that showed that on the account, Amanda filed something on DQ/LP's behalf on that account and that after the vacation that DQ/LP was doing, their edits would be separated by signatures. This was never challenged by any edits at any point from either person from that instance until the block of DQ/LP. LulzKiller (talk) 23:36, 29 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes that did happen. Though it was agreed by the users, nothing was insecure and nothing was broken. Neither is it against policy to date that happened in the past. User B using User A's account with permission doesn't immediately mean User B is incapable of having a secure account. John (talk) 06:27, 30 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
John, what I believe he's trying to say here, not unreasonably if you ask me, is that their story between then and now has several discrepancies, and given how we have no way of proving they are two separate people or if this isn't just a very long end-run around a previous block so Lawrence-Prairies can go on a rampage again, it would only be prudent to request Amanda provide proof, if only in private, they are not LP in any way, shape or form, preferably in a way that can be used to legally verify their identity, like how I had to send you a copy of my ID back on Orain to gain server rights. Otherwise, this drama is never going to end unless there is some way to break this who's who deadlock, and given all the crap we went through before and the resultant terrorism by LP, it's only reasonable to want to eliminate Amanda as being a long-game sock of the same so as to lay the constant doubt (and there is more than enough IMO) to rest forever. Until then, and I say this as someone who was once former staff at this farm's predecessor, I would not hand out wiki creator rights to this user, nor make them staff to any degree. GethN7 (talk) 13:32, 30 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Please note I am now passing to opposing this, as the user has lied about being Microsoft Staff and has provided a fake email address for confirmation that they are. I can not trust Amanda, so therefore I would not give permissions to a user I can't trust. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 14:25, 30 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
P.S.: I see that Amanda still reverts comments that they do not like, another reason to not accept this request. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 14:28, 30 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The general view overall seems to not be optimistic, therefore I am not going to grant the right. Any other sysadmin may continue to use their discretion in granting however. John (talk) 14:29, 30 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Know that the above claims by Reception123 regarding Outlook are false and should not be taken into consideration. -- Amanda (talk) 14:30, 30 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm not taking statements into account. He doesn't feel it's appropriate and neither does revi. Therefore for now I'm not comfortable granting rights. John (talk) 14:33, 30 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
For the record, until proof is provided (not a fictitious email address) I see the claims about being Outlook Staff as being inaccurate. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 14:36, 30 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The email given to Reception is not fictional. The only reason he thinks so is becasue it's not listed on the customer support website, but that's becasue it's not a customer support email. I will not comment further on this. -- Amanda (talk) 14:49, 30 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have found out that Microsoft Staff emails are different than the one that Amanda provided (with the help of revi, who has contacted them once before), so therefore I conclude that the email is not a real one. This is my final comment on this matter. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 16:10, 30 April 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You might want to consider this[edit source]

Seems our Amanda is someone we know and are not a fan of. User contributions and their usual pattern matches up too. GethN7 (talk) 16:52, 14 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This was something we were aware of since before the original ban RfC closed. It was even discussed in the original ban RfC and on IRC multiple times since the first RfC was opened. John (talk) 16:55, 14 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'll be blunt, John. I won't try to warn you again if you don't listen to me now, but this is our long-term vandal. Their WikiCanada Wiki mostly revolves around bridge articles. All the crap Amanda has done here to get backlash they did at Wikipedia under their now banned sock accounts. You've been showing quarter to someone who doesn't deserve it, and frankly, you'd have to be blind not to notice. If you want to ignore this, fine, but you've invited a viper into the bird nest of your own free will. GethN7 (talk) 17:00, 14 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would just like to point out that even if John would agree, it is not his decision to make, as Miraheze is community ran. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 17:06, 14 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
"if you don't listen to me" What have I ignored? "you'd have to be blind not to notice" I've noticed and said I have right above. I also said this has been known since before this RfC. "you've invited a viper into the bird nest of your own free will", I haven't done anything on my own accord. This proposal by me was supported 4 people, opposed by 1 and closed independently by someone who couldn't care what the outcome was. Status quo didn't have consensus though I disagree with the time given to discuss but that was SPF's choice not mine on when it was closed and neither was it my decision on how it ended. If you wish to take an issue with the decision itself then you need to talk with Southparkfan. John (talk) 17:07, 14 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Let me clarify this before it gets out of hand. Basically, it all comes down to this:
  • I Love Bridges = Lawrence-Prairies
  • Amanda != Lawrence-Prairies
  • SlitherSnakeSempter = Amanda
  • SlitherSnakeSempter != I Love Bridges
  • SlitherSnakeSempter is blocked because Amanda and ILB share the same IP range
  • EN Admins won't accept that Amanda != I Love Bridges because of this humorous essay.
Why are we still discussing this? -- Amanda (talk) 20:55, 14 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I must also note that the recent comments/actions by GethN7 in my humble opinion are inappropriate and are seriously crossing the line of harassment/personal attacks. Both of these go against the recently established Code of Conduct. As such, I request that this discussion be terminated without further action (If any steward/sysadmin disagrees, feel free to comment). -- Amanda (talk) 21:09, 14 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Fine, Amanda, I will say no more about this except the following: If I were in charge, when we threw you out as Lawrence-Praries, that would have been final, no matter how many times you vandalized and sockpuppeted, demanding we let you back in, but you eventually managed to wear down the staff here they decided suffering your presence was less hassle than standing for principle, which, assuming I had say, would not have happened. Further, I examined your LTA abuse record and have compared it to your various accounts here, and they all match up to a disturbing degree, so no offense, I'm not fooled, Lawrence-Praries/I Love Bridges, I know who you are, have known it for the longest time, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. Regardless, since the staff has decided to let you stay here despite all the vandalism, harassment and abuse you perpetuated prior, and I have no ability to change their minds, you can do whatever you want so long as no one here at Miraheze or its infrastructure is damaged by your actions. Also, this is why I oppose CoC pushers like you, because they are used to shut down legitimate concerns based on factual evidence anyone can evaluate for themselves, and I'm far from stupid, and I find it quite ironic a long time rule violator both here and there is now cowering behind rules when it suits them, but so long as you enjoy a shield you don't deserve and have not earned and I have no power to strip it from you, I won't try to stop you, but I will keep an eye out, as I have for the longest time. With that said, my objections are noted here for the record from here on out, and I want them to remain public so in case of future disputes, you can refer back to this if I do give you any more grief without cause. GethN7 (talk) 21:25, 14 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The above comments do not establish anything as they contain nothing but personal attacks. As such, GethN7 is hereby indefinitely banned from WikiCanada and I would advise the stewards to keep an eye out for further attacks. -- Amanda (talk) 23:03, 14 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

(reset indent) @GethN7: "I have no ability to change their minds" - First of all, the "staff" have not decided on this, since multiple staff members (including me) did not vote for the resolution that ultimately passed. Even if you would "have the ability to change our minds", that would not matter since banning/unbanning(locking/unlocking) was the community's decision through an RfC, any new actions/sanctions against the account would also be the decision of the community and could only be decided by an RfC (except if the user directly doesn't respect a policy and/or the RfC). Local blocks can also be the decision of local staff, such as the recent Phabricator disable, but any global actions against the user have to be decided by the community.

@Amanda: "I would advise the stewards to keep an eye out for further attacks." - first of all this is Meta, so there is no need to involve stewards. Second, personally I don't really see how GethN7's comments fit as harassment, as all he's doing is expressing his opinion and concerns and just because you don't like something, doesn't mean it should just be removed. As seen multiple times (Microsoft Staff, Wikipedia, etc.), you take someone providing evidence against you as "harassment", which in my opinion, is definitely not the case. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 04:51, 15 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mea culpa, Reception, thanks for correcting me where I was ignorant. However, now that I'm up to speed, I want it clear, also for the record, that if there was ever a vote to permanently and irrevocably expel a user for whom evidence both here and elsewhere indicates is nothing but trouble, then I will vote for said decision immediately and enthusiastically. Unfortunately, I doubt such a measure would do any good, as the one I am currently referring to will likely find some way back again even if that does happen, and I might as well get it out here and now if it is permissible I would like to reopen the decision to expel Lawrence-Praries once more, this time with that decision carrying more weight and permanence than it did prior, regardless of my personal pessimism it will be rendered a token gesture regardless. GethN7 (talk) 05:17, 15 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No problem, it's understandable for users to not be entirely sure of the process. For the "if it is permissible", no one can stop a user from opening an RfC, it is fully up to the user. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 05:29, 15 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have created the appropriate means of seeking this relief here for comment and community consensus. GethN7 (talk) 11:46, 15 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can we have some more specifics about this?[edit source]

John wrote: "The last few months have been a long struggle with excessive harassment from a mix of people in relation to my duties at Miraheze"

Can we have a more detailed summary of what happened?

Rsterbal (talk) 14:18, 28 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Since John has resigned, I doubt that he will answer this. You may see the main discussions here , Requests for Comment/Review exception to LP ban and reban them and even on this talkpage. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 15:03, 28 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I was looking for a summary, not links to hard to read wiki threads. Rsterbal (talk) 17:37, 28 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The summary (and this is very simplified, and might not reflect things exactly) and I will try to put the most neutral way possible is that AllTheTropes users disagreed with John's proposal to unban Amanda and with the decision itself (which was actually decided on by SPF) and therefore a user insulted John, myself and NDKilla and others continued to express their disagreement with John. After more tensions between ATT users and John, he decided to leave the project. I'm sorry that this isn't explained to well and may subjective, as I could not possibly explain the whole situation in such a short summary, Striking as it is a poor explanation of the events. and to get a real grasp of what happened, it is indicated that you read the wiki threads. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 17:41, 28 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm going to give a summary since Reception did a very basic one that doesn't even touch the surface of it. Since around December 2016, a user from AllTheTropes has been tracking down every thing I've done, in a continued manner using abusive language to refer to me and my opinions. Taking a classic attitude of "you're not doing what I want, you're a coward, spineless and fucking useless" while attacking me for having an opinion at all. I've asked them to stop over such period of 5 months and they chose to acknowledge but ignore. Finally they did it on wiki and another steward reviewed it and acted. From that point, it turned into a case of the community threatening to leave because I was responsible for the entire incident. I was blamed for getting harassed. After heated discussions in private with labster, I decided to walk away as it was clear miraheze was no longer what I started, an inclusive equal community but it became one where harassment and abuse was deemed "acceptable" and it's the victims fault for getting harassed. As such I was clearly not welcome and in such a high stress volunteer environment, the added abuse for not helpful. John (talk) 18:17, 28 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you very much for your response. I hope it helps people understand that the failure to engage people together toward common goals can lead to serious losses in other areas of the service. Rsterbal (talk) 19:36, 28 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
For the record, I would like to say I sympathize for starters, John. I would also like to say despite misgivings some have shown you, you continue to do an excellent job in regard to stewardship of overall management of Miraheze as an entity, and it would be a great loss, at least for me, if you were to cease that duty, in which your performance, despite any naysayers to the contrary, has been exemplary as far as I'm concerned. GethN7 (talk) 14:33, 3 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you. Not all from your community are bad - some are just more vocal than others and its a shame you aren't in the vocal category. John (talk) 14:41, 3 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd also like to add, upon reflection, I have misjudged you. Granted, past experiences may have led me to question your capability for certain roles, but you seem have returned to the community with a much calmer and reflective state of mind than I may have given you credit for, so if you would like to reconsider the CoC position, I would be happy to advocate your possible appointment. GethN7 (talk) 16:24, 9 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's okay. There's atleast two candidates who would do an equal or better job than I could and I've never really be community oriented. I'd rather persue my skills and expertise and focus on supporting the technical team keeping the service running. Thank you again however. John (talk) 18:15, 9 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

WikiDiscover[edit source]

I noticed that WikiDiscover has a podcast category. I'm not sure how WikiDiscover categorizes wikis, however I know that there are at least three other public podcasting wikis on Miraheze in addition to the one that WikiDiscover lists:

Counting private wikis, there is also:

CoolieCoolster (talk) 20:22, 12 May 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

WikiDiscover gets the categories from Special:ManageWiki. In the interest of organisation I'll put those wikis in that category now. Thanks, John (talk) 21:49, 12 May 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The reason for discouraging translation of some pages[edit source]

Hi, and I'd like you to ask why you have discouraged translation of some pages. I think people should be able to read any content on meta in their native languages unless there are reasons that they MUST ONLY read the original English version, and I disagree with what you have done, as I see no reason for removal (I also don't understand why some important policy pages, such as Dormancy Policy and System administrators, are not listed for translation). Could you tell me why you have done this, and why some pages are NOT listed for translation? Thank you.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 19:12, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm not responsible for adding pages to translation, why they are not added is beyond me and I'm as curious as you. The reason I've removed the pages I have is they are a waste of time to be translated. They are fairly technical and of no use to people who aren't system administrators (whom are all English or understand English enough to read them). Adding extremely large technical pages takes away valuable time from translators who can spend that time translating pages which will a) be of use to people to read in their native language, b) add value and c) be beneficial to translate. John (talk) 19:16, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As for removing technical pages targeting sysadmins, I understood. However, even if you are not responsible, I think adding pages for translation is something a translation admin (you or MacFan4000) can do with his/her own discretion (or are there any policies restricting it?), and still don't see why neither of you two add them.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 19:31, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There are no policies, I just don't do it by choice because I have limited time and my time goes more towards running the site than managing translations - I only did this because it's been bugging me a while and no one had acted based on my previous requests. Please address all comments towards current translatability to MacFan4000 please. John (talk) 19:33, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK. Thanks for your reply.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 19:38, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Dropping support for TLS versions[edit source]

Hi. I run Firefox 10 and this change will be a major nuisance. There is nothing I do here that requires secrecy and my years of tweaks to customize Firefox might not carry over to newer versions. Spıke (talk)14:00 25-Sep-2018

Hi, FireFox 10 was released in 2013 if I am correct and there have been at least 50 new releases since then and many many security fixes and so on - I would strongly encourage you to invest the time needed to upgrade as soon as possible. While nothing you do here may benefit form forward secrecy (except perhaps your password and personal details being transferred and stored), we do host quite a few wikis with sensitive content both personally and professionally and therefore security should be at the forefront of our minds at all times. Disabling TLSv1.0 isn't a new idea, it's been removed from being a PCI-compliant protocol and all commercial sites were given until June 30th 2018 to remove this protocol from their operations. Any site that collects billing information and uses it for the purpose of monetary transactions and still supports TLSv1.0 is technically operating out of international security standards and can not act as a licensed website for this purpose legally. The deprecation and removal of TLSv1.0 is happening slowly but eventually with Wikipedia expecting to drop support for the version by the end of this year. You can keep an eye on this document that shows usage of TLSv1.0 and TLSv1.1 on Miraheze sites and following the blog, if the numbers remain below 1% of our total traffic, we will be removing the support. While, as per the blog, you reaching out is greatly appreciated - unfortunately unless you can provide a timescale for resolving this issue within the next 2 months - this won't be stopping Miraheze removing support for these early and unsecure protocols. Thanks, John (talk) 16:54, 25 September 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That is a good argument for supporting the new versions, but not an argument at all for dropping support for users who wish to connect over the old versions. Spıke (talk)18:48 25-Sep-2018
So a) improves security of the service, b) the old versions are being phased out everywhere including in the most popular sites in the world and c) the older versions are no longer secure - aren't valid reasons? John (talk) 18:54, 25 September 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I believe my reply is the one I just gave. And yes, the new versions are popular and Firefox 10 is not. You have made the case for Miraheze offering the capability, but not for compelling all to switch over. Spıke (talk)20:25 25-Sep-2018
This isn't really a move for popularity, it's a move for security. TLSv1.0 isn't secure just like SSLv2 and SSLv3 aren't. We've offered this since we began, the compelling reason to switch should be, "TLSv1.0 is no longer secure and websites are dropping the support". Previously it's every payment provider, Today it's Miraheze, a few months down the line its Wikipedia then Google and so on. If you can provide a strong reason for why Miraheze should not take user security seriously, I'd happily listen but I doubt there is one that is strong enough to sacrifice compatibility for 5-6 year old software current, real risks to users now. In fact software 5 years old support TLSv1.2. John (talk) 20:36, 25 September 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello John. I have become quite interested in your project lately and I would really like to help you guys out. My hope is that I can become a wiki creator sometime soon and then hopefully a sysop and maybe even a steward later on. Thanks! --Examknow (talk) 23:14, 8 May 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi @Examknow:, great to see the enthusiasm, something we definitely need here! There aren't a lot of ways to help in a community sense (unfortunately now I think about it) besides supporting people and becoming a wiki creator. Generally, keeping an eye out on Community noticeboard for questions or support is definitely appreciated, you can join us on IRC or Discord to get to know us a bit better. IRC/Discord is probably the best place to start by asking if you would like ideas for stuff you can do to get involved from a community stand point - getting involved from a technical angle is slightly more complicated but if you'd like to, find me on IRC as "JohnLewis" and we can chat. Start Editing message[edit source]

Dear, John I have question regarding this message problem. Everytime I want to edit an page on the 2b2t wiki, it keeps coming up with "You want to starting editing or using Visual editor", and it annoys me bit that can't just edit and everytime have to press editor or visual edit. Is there a way to remove it? Regards: Quarnds

asking for an exemption to dormancy[edit source]

Hi,

Last year I have managed to create a wiki about universities which offer a graduate (called "master") formation in sociolinguistics in french language (https://mastersociolinguistique.miraheze.org/wiki/Accueil).

I think this wiki is useful for students who want to compare different graduating formations in this field existing in France, or french-speaking countries.

Thanks to some mailing-lists, teachers of this discipline know its existence, and are able to recommend it to their students.

But this wiki doesn't need to be edited very often : in France, every university actualises the content of a graduate curriculum every 4 years (but they don't all do it on the same year). This means that this wiki could remain useful and relevant with only a few changes a year.

I am seeing the usefulness of such a wiki for a long-term period, and hoping that at some time, it could be hosted by an institution which would just have to copy/paste its content. But, as no university has showed interest in hosting it for now, Miraheze seems a good place to do it.

For all this reasons, I would like this wiki to be exempted of the dormancy policy.

I am ready to give you any further information you need.

sincerly yours,

Malo Morvan

A Little Request[edit source]

Thank you very much for unblocking me. However, I was wondering if you could block this account (Bugambilia) again as I have a new name (Aeonia Rose) that I'd like to use here on Miraheze instead. Thank you! Bugambilia (talk) 17:34, 23 April 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Bugambilia you already unblock. -- Sourav Talk... 17:44, 23 April 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I know I'm already unblocked. I just thought that I shouldn't have two active accounts here so since I want to use this name here instead of Bugambilia, I was asking if that account could be blocks again so I'd only have this account here on Miraheze. Aeonia Rose (talk) 17:52, 23 April 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Bugambilia This is your final warning. I will block this account and let you keep your new account Aeonia Rose however please note that since you used this account while your main one was blocked that qualifies as ban evasion. Since the vandalism before wasn't that severe you will not be blocked again for now but if you vandalize Miraheze again or use accounts without disclosing them you will be blocked indefinitely again and we will not be so lenient again. Reception123 (talk) (C) 17:55, 23 April 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I understand. Thank you and I promise that I won't vandalize or change accounts here again. Aeonia Rose (talk) 18:14, 23 April 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Phabricator project[edit source]

Hi, unless there is some policy which I am not aware of, please don't randomly change the color of my Phabricator tracking project without notifying me. If you don't like the pink for some reason I am happy to use a different color, but gray or black are the two colors that I don't want to use, because they blend right in and don't stand out at all, which is the point (I want tasks that I'm tracking to stand out from the others). Thanks. Amanda Catherine (talk) 12:58, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

In the interest of separating the different types of projects that we have on Phabricator (i.e. ACL, Tag, Project, etc.) a color that is to be used is defined for each type of project, and mixing it up would be confusing. I have clarified this in the policy. Reception123 (talk) (C) 13:14, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

User merge gone wrong[edit source]

Hello, a few weeks ago I asked you to merge 4 users into a single one, Special:CentralAuth/Maestro_venerabile. I see it's done but the user (who created the temporary account Special:CentralAuth/Maestro_venerabiIe (final I-E instead of L-E) in order to get back his old account from Wikia) says he can't either log in nor change password because he's being told he didn't give an email (he did, so he says). What should I tell him? Also, his user page seems to redirect to itself, something obviously went wrong. Thanks in advance.--Wedhro (talk) 00:20, 2 May 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Maintenance tidying on Meta[edit source]

Hi John,

I'm new to Miraheze, but have followed the site anonymously for several months, and have been impressed by the goals of the organization to provide free wiki hosting on a not-for-profit basis. I stumbled upon it in my interactions with another Wikimedia user, MJL, who had created a wiki on Miraheze. I also noted a recent RfC that, I think, proposed to bring in some revenue through a partnership with NordVPN. Though the RfC seemed to have closed as unsuccessful, I personally would've supported it as I recognize the challenges in raising revenue to fund the hosting and nominal other costs. As far as I can tell, Miraheze Limited has no paid staff, and all board members are volunteers (like the editors). I'm wondering if you guys have explored applying for an annual grant from Wikimedia Foundation? They seem to get fairly frequent proposals to start a free wiki hosting business; they generate sizable revenues from corporate and personal donations, so my thinking is, through an ongoing affiliation in which they granted Miraheze between $1,000-5,000 USD per year, they could essentially solve that perennially proposed project idea whilst not having to take on the operating costs directly. Instead, they both (a) control their costs through a fixed annual grant to Miraheze and (b) build community support through their support of like-minded organizations like Miraheze. I'll probably discuss this with Owen, who handles the revenue and expense processing.

Anyway, while trying to help out with some maintenance-related tasks on Meta, I seem to have triggered an edit filter in my attempt to add Template:Delete to a user page, which exists as a broken redirect to a non-existent page. I've cleared the Special:DoubleRedirects page, and had hoped to clear the Special:BrokenRedirects page. Though I have a clue, I realize I'm probably too new to request local administrator rights on Meta, but is there some sort of right that you can add to my user account to allow me to bypass that edit/abuse filter?

Cheers,

@RhinosF1:, thanks, that works. I'd like to help out with drafting some policies which Meta lacks. Does Miraheze have a policy similar to English Wikipedia's Bold, Revert, Discuss policy, or should all new policies or proposed amendments to policies go through the Community Noticeboard? Please discuss the changes somewhere first. ~ RhinosF1 - (chat)· acc· c - (on) 06:16, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@RhinosF1: Okay, sounds good. For proposed policy changes, is it best to use the community noticeboard or the Requests for Comment, or is either equally acceptable, especially if the proposal includes a roughly formatted RfC? Dmehus (talk) 14:09, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Either will personally do for local changes, for global policy, use RfC ~ RhinosF1 - (chat)· acc· c - (on) 14:30, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Interface administrator request[edit source]

Thanks, @John:, for fixing the informational page I drafted and also of amending the closing of the RfC. I won't close any RfCs in future, as I wasn't aware that non-bureaucrats/stewards were discouraged from closing RfCs that were likely to be at least partially successful. Nevertheless, I appreciate the refinement of the RfC. And, at the end of the day, we have now have a useful documentation page for the interface administrator user group.

Anyway, I'd like to request interface administrator for the limited purpose of correcting minor errors or fixing or adding wikilinks on special pages that are controlled through the MediaWiki: namespace (i.e., WikiGnome-type editing). I can confirm that my password is strong, contains a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols, and I only edit Miraheze and Wikimedia wikis from my home computer as part of prudent security best practices.

Your closure[edit source]

Your closure was really premature, one the community is allowed to vote on the revocation of any rights period. Two, if you had looked at all into the user's contribs and logs, you would find that NDK, myself and reception have all tried to explain the content policy to him and an entire wiki to no avail. --Zppix (Meta | CVT Member | talk to me) 09:28, 21 September 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The community are not allowed to revoke a wiki creators user rights per the wiki creator policy. This has been the topic of two separate RfCs, twice the community haven’t supported community revocation and once the community rejected a plea that a community vote was grounds to revoke wiki creator. TemplateStyles on Meta[edit source]

Hi John. I was wondering if it was possible to enable the TemplateStyles extension for Meta Wiki. I was working on importing some help pages I had created some months earlier, and many of them use templates that import their CSS using TemplateStyles. Doug on Discord suggested this probably was uncontroversial enough not to require a community discussion, so I thought I'd ask you first (it seems relatively uncontroversial). Thanks. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 16:09, 17 October 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'd definitely  Strong support TemplateStyles being enabled on Meta. @Void: even mentioned previously (also on Discord) we might want to look at migrating some of our template-specific CSS styles from MediaWiki:Common.css to TemplateStyles, so I can definitely see a strong use case for this extension. Article count for site incorrect?[edit source]

RE: Wackypedia

I am on other Mediawiki sites and there is no such problem there.

What appears to be spaces other than mainspace on the site are actually pseudospaces (WackyDictionary: and WackyGames:, for example). The only real space designated is "Wackypedia:" which does not report in the page count AFAIK. It is impossible to get a proper count for "All pages", but "Short pages", which are content pages, reports 1612 pages whereas the count reported on the main page is currently 1479.

Further, if an empty/blank template or category has been deleted, the count reduces, sometimes by 2! This should not be so since they are not content pages. These deletions do get reported in the deletion log but the overall count reduction does not happen on other Mediawiki sites that I am on. Certainly, adding either type page does not increase the page count and should not.

Thanks in advance for your help with this. --Karakorum (talk) 05:01, 4 November 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

ChirroHirro23 Hi, welcome to Miraheze, and to Meta. Thank you for signing your posts with four tildes (~~~~). You can request a wiki here, taking care to define a clear purpose, scope, and topic(s) for your wiki. Ensure your wiki has a clear sitename and a subdomain that matches, roughly speaking, your wiki's purpose and/or subdomain. Ensure you categorise your wiki, too. Thanks. Hello.

@Incnis Mrsi: Hi again. I have to say that I'm quite troubled by the fact that your recent contributions here have exclusively amounted to reporting other users and failing to assume good faith. I would like to repeat the point I made on my talk page in relation to the other matter: please attempt to resolve any issues that you have with a particular user with them first, before coming and "reporting" then to someone else and seeking a "sanction" or something of the sort. Reception123 (talk) (C) 14:25, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I echo Reception123's sentiments completely. Reception123 and I have  resolved this for you at User talk:Reception123 and even allowed you to keep Module:UCS on Meta Wiki, even though Miraheze Template Wiki is probably the better venue.
While I'm not sure it needs a response, I protected User talk:RhinosF1 mainly because Loginwiki is not for having discussions with users; the correct venue is the user's local user talk page or their Meta Wiki user talk page, as applicable. Nevertheless, since I agree RhinosF1 cannot have their user talk page protected indefinitely, I will unprotect it, but I'd advise you against posting on multiple users' user talk pages and to instead drop the proverbial stick. Dmehus (talk) 14:30, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hey, do you make me an allowance hosting Module:UCS here? Perhaps John encourages a positive PR of Miraheze (such as linking from my fastily wrecked page, which is in turn referenced in an archived en.Wikipedian discussion, to user:Incnis Mrsi/UCS map here). If the local establishment doesn’t care at all, then I’ll move my module out on a short notice. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 15:13, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm not sure what you're getting at here, but you're more than welcome to either host your modules here on Meta Wiki, on Miraheze Template Wiki (they won't be deleted), or you can also request a wiki, defining a clear purpose and scope for your wiki, where you can host your templates and script creations. Hope that helps. Dmehus (talk) 15:23, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I completely forgot to be honest that Doug protected my meta talk when I was off for a bit. I'm kind of half here on and off at the moment and probably should have changed that.

Would you say that this wiki is violating the Content Policy?[edit source]

There are pages about certain internet users on that wiki, and if I remember correctly, it's not allowed to make pages about internet users on any Miraheze wiki, even if it's in the name of constructive criticism (which this wiki claims it's giving), as that could lead to unsubstantiated hatred, like what had happened on Atrocious YouTubers Wiki and Horrible Vyonders Wiki. I understand that the Wretched YouTube Videos Wiki means well, yet with the lack of citations in many pages like these, I believe that this wiki might be violating the Content Policy and instead come off to any user unfamiliar with the users being criticized in these pages as possible slander. Could you investigate the wiki for any violations please? - Thank you, Trashanimal (talk) 21:47, 2 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Trashanimal I appreciate you linking to a couple pages, but please note that Stewards are not necessarily going to review an entire wiki's pages for you. It's incumbent upon users to report specific Content Policy issues to Stewards, who will first attempt to work with the local wiki communities to resolve issues. In regards to the the first page, it could indeed do well to provide citations for its claims, but the page is mostly just providing criticism. The one issue I did note is with File:Plainapple287.jpg, which is more of a copyright violation issue. There's no indication the wiki is authorized to publish that photo, and, if they are, there's no attribution information. That's something Stewards would work with local administration on. With regard to the second page, at first glance, again similar sort of thing as the first page in that it's mainly providing criticism. It, too, could do well to add sources for any claims, and wiki editors could do well to review the overall tone of the page. As no users' personal information appears to be posted, this would likely take the form of suggested guidance to local administration in developing improved local content quality policies that together would help to ensure the wiki's pages do not run afoul of the Content Policy. Hope that helps. Dmehus (talk) 22:21, 2 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, thanks, I'm not trying to wreck the wiki, just that I don't want unsourced pages as pages with that problem gave off the wrong vibe on many wikis in the past, like Toxic Fandoms & Hatedoms Wiki. Trashanimal (talk) 22:58, 2 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello John[edit source]

I recently created an Extended confirmed implicit user group on my wiki FAMEPedia and on the data repository FAMEData
On the Community noticeboard, I asked for help if it is possible to create a permission for the user group editextendedprotected (Edit pages protected as "Allow only extendedconfirmedusers") and a Cool Steward helped me with that
He created the permission editextendedprotected (Edit pages protected as "Allow only extendedconfirmedusers") for FAMEPedia with this PR and for FAMEData with this PR
So the steward said that [The both PRs is needed to be merged] before i can see the permission on my wiki and this merge can only be done by a SRE which I found your name to appear on the list,
Please help with merging the two PRs above. Ugochimobi (talk) 20:40, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ugochimobi One of my PRs was merged today, but the other PR (for Famedata Wiki) still needs to be merged as it required resolving a merge conflict. While John may be able to merge it, it should be merged for you tomorrow by Reception123. Hope that helps. Dmehus (talk) 20:44, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay, no problem thanks for being helpful sire!! Dmehus Ugochimobi (talk) 20:48, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can you delete gamewalkthroughs miraheze?--Iron Sword 23 (talk) 19:24, 21 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Why do you need it deleted, though? I mean, others may want to contribute to it. Dmehus (talk) 19:33, 21 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Good point. Disregard this request. Iron Sword 23 (talk) 19:36, 21 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
 Disregarded. Dmehus (talk) 20:37, 21 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, you seem to be doing a bit better. Thank you. Dmehus (talk) 20:43, 21 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
My plan is to do a lot better. Iron Sword 23 (talk) 20:45, 21 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Nintendo Miraheze[edit source]

Thank you so much for reopening the wiki. I have sent a message to the main admin there, and hopefully he responds. I wanted to ask though: what if he does not respond? Who would have Special:ManageWiki rights then? RMV2003 (talk) 17:52, 14 November 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

RMV20003 If they do not respond to your request, you can hold a local election for a new bureaucrat, then return to stewards' noticeboard and request for a Steward to assess your local election request. If there are certain ManageWiki changes you require in the interim, as part of your wiki development process, you can also request this there. Thanks. Dmehus (talk) 17:57, 14 November 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
What would I call the page for local election on the Nintendo Miraheze wiki? RMV2003 (talk) 17:05, 15 November 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Never mind I made one here. Sorry to bother you RMV2003 (talk) 15:06, 16 November 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
RMV2003 Thanks. I will follow up with this in a few days. Please also add a small notice on the wiki's Main Page (if you're able), linking to your election request. If you're not able to do this, let me know and I'll add the notice for you. Dmehus (talk) 06:56, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hey[edit source]

I have a question Rtyoip alt (talk) 16:29, 28 December 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Rtyoip alt: If you have general questions, it's much more preferable you post them on the Community noticeboard and not the talk pages of administrators as they may not check their talk page often. Agent Isai Talk to me! 17:29, 28 December 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And John often doesn't look at your talk page or the answers on it. Instead, ask us noticeboards and ask your question. --YellowFrogger (Talk) 18:32, 28 December 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Email Question[edit source]

I have a typo in my email address in Phabricator but no password was shipped for it, I also can’t find channels to chang email and only displayed email confirm page, how can I change it? 小美粉粉 (talk) 05:03, 21 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@小美粉粉: Hi, would you like me to change your Phabricator email to the one you have defined for your wiki account? Reception123 (talk) (C) 06:30, 21 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Reception123: Yes, but my account has no email. 小美粉粉 (talk) 07:18, 21 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Another question[edit source]

How to uninstall extension Abuse filter on my wiki? ManageWiki special page doesn’t show it. --小美粉粉 (talk - contribs - logs - uploads - email - global contribs) 04:40, 6 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You can't, it's a global extension, sorry. Agent Isai Talk to me! 04:41, 6 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Why globally? In Fandom if occured emergency situation, Fandom will enable, otherwise not. --小美粉粉 (talk - contribs - logs - uploads - email - global contribs) 06:35, 6 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@小美粉粉: You may not see it but AbuseFilter stops a lot of spam in the background, just check Special:AbuseLog to verify that. As such, it cannot and will not be disabled, apologies. Agent Isai Talk to me! 07:17, 6 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
so it likes Phalanx in fandom, a homemade and global software, doesn’t affect abuse filter --小美粉粉 (talk - contribs - logs - uploads - email - global contribs) 07:40, 6 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@小美粉粉: I don't know what Phalanx is but I guess so if it's like Abuse Filter. Agent Isai Talk to me! 07:42, 6 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Your user page[edit source]

Hello John, shouldn't your user page be updated, as you have become a Steward again back in November? DarkMatterMan4500 (talk) (contribs) 13:12, 23 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Resigning sysop and interface administrator permissions[edit source]

Hi John,

Would you please kindly remove the above two permissions for me? I'm just not that active on Meta Wiki and, with Zppix being more active of late and having had a long-standing personal animosity towards you and me, the ability to work with him constructively has become untenable. As well, with my real life commitments, I don't expect to be that active anyway, so will focus my limited volunteer time to my Trust and Safety responsibilities and any other local wikis.

Thanks,
Dmehus (talk) 00:22, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Done per your request. Thank you for your work in these two roles. John (talk) 00:26, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
John, thanks. I've very much appreciated the opportunity to volunteer with Miraheze. When I joined Miraheze, it was at a time when I was looking for a free wiki host to host my e-portfolio following completion of a Library & Information Technology diploma. I loved, and still do love, the vision of Miraheze and the community-centric nature of Miraheze, but since I'm also busy working full time, I realistically can't sustain the previous levels of volunteerism and activity, so consistent with this global policy, I need to step back and limit my volunteerism commensurately with my availability. Replacing a Phabricator-recreated wiki with a server copy[edit source]

Hi, I was directed here from an answer on the Community noticeboard. If I wanted to use Phabricator to recreate a wiki, then when the servers come back from repair and have that wiki saved as it was just before the problem last month, and I want to use this server copy of that wiki instead of the Phabricator recreation, how would I go about making it so that the server copy of that wiki is the one that is in use? Requests for IRC Group Contact[edit source]

I withdrew mine, but the other two requests for GC have now been open for nearly a month, and seem decided. I am requesting that you please take a look, and close the requests. Thanks. MacFan4000 (Talk Contribs) 02:43, 11 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Geom[edit source]

I see that you have globally blocked the user, however, something strange has happened, I know that any account, once globally blocked, will prevent logging into any Miraheze wiki until it is unlocked, but I would assume that also, after the block, on CentralAuth, no longer show which wikis he have registered in, Well, if you look at Geom's global account, you will see that it was registered on librepedia a few days ago, ¿,':|? regards No se (talk) 03:29, 31 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@No se: I'm afraid John has become dormant and is otherwise no longer a functionary for these things. Beyond that, an inquiry related to a Terms of Use block would technically be a matter to pose to Trust and Safety. However I would offer a simple answer to this: looking into the account connections, both wikis imported quite a few pages around the time the attachments were made. Imports have the effect of 'gluing' edits made by an imported username to the account they're named after. I've seen this effect before and I think that is the case here. --Raidarr (talk) 10:40, 31 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
